Wu Bai in the World Journal, and Springsteen coming to Oakland

Hope everyone is having a good week - I'm back from LA now, well actually I spent most of my time in sunny OC. I mainly did a lot of shopping along Rodeo, Brea, Fullerton and Sunset. I also checked out a very cool live jazz restaurant - more on that later this week.

So, in yesterday's World Journal (a national newspaper written in Chinese) Taiwanese rocker Wu Bai was photographed with my Mercury News profile of him. In their paper, he says that after a "one-foot" length article in the Mercury News, he has truly made it in America.

In the picture, he holds the story upside down, which is symbolic. During the Chinese New Year, you can spot the character for "spring-time" on signs upside down - because the Chinese character for "upside down," "dao," sounds like the word for "coming." So, Wu Bai was essentially saying Wu Bai has "come" to the states.

As for today, Bruce Springsteen announced his tour dates. He comes to Oakland, May 5th.

And for tonight, ch-check it out:

    SKRATCHPAD
WHERE: Sublounge Bar, 628 20th St. @ 3rd St., SF
    WHEN: 9 p.m. to 2 a.m. tonight 4/6
    TIX: 21+; no cover
WHY: a session of blunts, beats and cuts

    Miss Liu,

You should be careful how you write China and Taiwan. ''The World Journal'' is a national newspaper in mandarin language about Taiwan people. It has nothing to do with CHina. It is owned by the United Daily News in Taipei, a mandarin paper there, as you know.

I am curious about his shows in the USA. Do you think most Americans perceive him to be a Chinese rocker and therefore from CHINA, communist CHina, and are not aware that he is really from Taiwan, which is a separate and distinct country from commie China?

Or do you think nobody really cares? In taiwan, Wu Bai is not all the popular anymore, although he and his bandmates continue to churn out CDs. He is popular with people around 40 - 50 years old, the teens and 20s don't care for him anymore. He is LKK, SPP, old timer.

But yes, he is a great stage performer, singer, guitarist and writer. Actor? So so.

But his comments in the USA media make him sound like an arrogant person, like look at me, I am the king of Asia rock and roll. I wonder if it was a translation thing, or did he really say those things? in English ,it sounds rude.

How did he come across to YOU? humble, rude? arrogant? a god?

Wu Bai, whose concerts sell out arenas throughout the Far East, boasts he is "the one and only Chinese rocker."

HE IS NOT THE ONE AND ONLY CHINESE ROCKER. HE IS NOT EVEN A CHINESE ROCKER. HE IS NOT FROM CHINA. HE IS A TAIWANESE ROCKER. AND HE IS NOT THE ONE AND ONLY. WAS HE JOKING or MOCKING YOU?

    Rock of Taiwan

EDGE, GOOD LOOKS PROVIDE CHARISMA THAT CROSSES OVER

True: *** he has edge, good looks, great drummer, great band! i hope he does cross over in USA. he should. be USA is racist country and ASians need not apply for rock and pop, not even Coco Lee or A-mei or any Japanese popsters too. america is racist to the core.

    Mercury News

He's been dubbed the King of Rock.

    Across Asia, that is.

REALLY? WHO) DUBBED HIM THAT? I NEVER SAW THAT IN ANY PAPER! THAT IS PR HYPE FROM HIS LABEL...

With his candid style of classic rock, Wu Bai has been compared to the likes of Bruce Springsteen and Bon Jovi.

But this rocker resists the comparisons, insisting there is no one like him, that he is ``the one and only *Chinese rocker.''

NOT CHINESE. DID HE REALLY SAY CHINESE? HE IS TAIWANESE. CHINA AND TAIWAN ARE TWO DIFFERENT COUNTRIES AND WU BAI IS PROUD TO BE TAIWANESE. DID HE SAY CHINESE OR TAIWANESE?

During his first American tour, Wu Bai is scheduled to sign autographs in San Jose tonight and to perform at San Francisco's DNA Lounge on Tuesday. The 1,000-capacity club will make for a much more intimate show than the 20,000- to 50,000-seat venues he's used to playing in Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia, Japan, China and Taiwan.

``The other day we did a show in Atlantic City, and the audience was separated into Chinese, Hong Kong and Taiwanese,'' says Edith Chen, Wu Bai's manager. ``They shouted at him, `Go-ba' (pronounced GO-baw), his name in Taiwanese. It was very exciting. They used their own language to shout out the singer's name.''

    Wu Bai (which means 500)

WHY IS HE CALLED 500? DON'T YOU THINK YOU SHOULD EXPLAIN THAT TO YOUR READERS?

has arrived on the heels of a trend toward more Taiwanese-style rock: a harder brand sung with the local dialect.

The singer hails from the agricultural county of Chiayi, Taiwan. He's the latest of a recent string of Taiwanese artists to perform in the Bay Area. Rebel rocker A-Yue was here in October, balladeer Zhang Di in January, and punk rockers Mayday in February.

Wu Bai's latest album, ``Two Face Man,'' includes songs in Taiwanese and Mandarin. The album cover pictures the rocker with a fake shark on his head, a perfect example of his music and personality.

``It means not friendly, but cool and fun,'' Wu Bai says by phone from a Los Angeles hotel.

He says that like a shark, his music is powerful and draws tears. He writes from emotion. ``The first thing I think about is what makes me excited or what makes me alive,'' says Wu Bai, who also has written music for movies and other pop artists, like Hong Kong singers Andy Lau, who starred in ``House of Flying Daggers,'' and Karen Mok, who starred in ``Around the World in 80 Days.''

The artist has also dabbled in film, ***stealing the spotlight from other more seasoned actors in the 1998 Taiwanese romantic comedy ``The Personals''

    NO HE DID NOT!

and the 2000 Hong Kong action flick ``Time and Tide.'' He has a television project in Taiwan in the works.

While his music's sound has an edge like the fangs of a shark, the goofiness of the image of him with a shark on his head is like his personality. He giggled through much of his phone interview. His promoter, George Trivino, says he's silly and fun-loving.

TRUE, HE IS GOOFY AND FUN LOVING AND A GREAT ARTIST. TAIWANESE ARTIST. NOT CHINESE.

But, like a shark, he prefers to be alone.

NOT TRUE. HE IS MARRIED, To THE WOMAN WHO RUNS HIS LABEL

    FOR TEN YEARS NOW.

Although known to be a swooner, this 37-year-old rocker is still single.

    NOT SINGLE. MARRIED LONG TIME

On his off-time, he likes jogging, going to hot springs and watching Japanese wrestling.

He has been performing for close to a decade and a half, and he's not planning on stopping any time soon.

15 years, yes. HE IS GREAT! AMERICA SHOULD PAY ATTENTION!

``I'm not satisfied with myself. I keep doing this trying to satisfy,'' Wu Bai says. ``I don't think there is a possibility to satisfy myself. . . . I think it's a long way to go.''

Now, April 26, WU BAI admitted to Taiwan media that he is married and that he is not single, as this newspaper reported earlier.
